Llanwern Member in Newport County Hall of Fame
A long servant of this club Mr Len Weare will be inducted into this year Newport County Hall of Fame. Len who sadly passed away on 21st September 2012 is Newport County’s Newport County’s all-time record appearance holder with 607 games in 15 years with the club. His achievements as a goalkeeper were fantastic such as playing against the great Sir Stanley Matthews and being called up as a reserve for the 1958 world cup.
Len loved this club and the game of football that much that he wouldn’t even miss a game on his wedding day! He left straight after his wedding to play against Millwall down Somerton Park with his newly wedded wife Joyce in the crowd still holding her bouquet!
A great man who loved Llanwern Golf club with members still sharing stories about him. Club member Elwyn Jenkins said ‘I was lucky enough to belong to the same Saturday ‘golf school’ as Lenny for nearly 20 years at Llanwern Golf Clun. He was quietly spoken, a true gentleman with a wealth of enjoyable and interesting stories, whom all his mates sadly miss.
