World Champions – Llanwern can’t stop winning! Step aside Jack we have a new King of Llanwern! Step forward popular club member and local PE teacher James Savastano. Sav has just returned from Australia where he was manager of the Wales Deaf Rugby Team playing in the inaugural World Deaf Rugby 7’s Tournament and I am so pleased to say they were crowned World Champions. On their way to victory Wales defeated England, Fiji Barbarians, Hong Kong, Australia Barbarians, World Barbarians (Argentina & Italy) & Fiji on the first 2 days to finish as number one seeds. The knockout stages saw Wales play The World Barbarians in the quarter final, FiJi in the semi-final and a comeback victory in the final to be crowned World Champions an incredible achievement. As team manager Sav’s role (he modestly says) was purely organisational and logistics with a little bit of coaching. But all the planning came to fruition in the final! To finish off the tour they won 32-5 in the test match vs Australia to go unbeaten for the week. Sav hopes it will raise awareness of the team and that if anybody has hearing loss and plays rugby please to feel free to contact him. As a registered charity they raise all of their money themselves with very limited and no financial help from the WRU. So if any members or their businesses would like to be associated with the World Champions of Deaf Rugby 7s Sav and the Welsh team have various sponsorship packages available. Fresh back from his incredible adventures down under Sav is now looking forward to seeing you all back on the course where I’m sure he will only be too glad to tell you all about it! Well done Sav from everybody at Llanwern.
