Competition news

August Stableford

Congratulations to Bryn Anderson on continuing his hot streak with a winning 41 points, just beating Keith Armstrong with 40 and Chris Bickerton with 39. Winning Division 2 with 37 points was Graham Lewis, beating Tim Forde and Anthony Murphy on count back.

Well done to all and a fantastic £120 for Nearest The Pin went to Roger Chapman and £17.33 for the 2s. You have to be in it to win it!


Cock ‘O’ North Winter league entries now open

It’s that time of year again! Registration is now open in the Pro Shop for the 2017/ 18 Cock ‘O’ North leagues.

Registration this year is limited to only 64 teams so be quick. The 1st fixture is to be played on the 1st October. Closing date for registration is 10th September.

Cocks organisers this year are Vice Captain Colin Wood and Peter Dixey.

Scottie Reviews The Return of The Classic

This week Scotty trialled the 2017 Callaway Steelhead XR Fairway Wood. A more modern interpretation of the iconic shaped original steelhead which was a fan favourite in late 90's and early noughties! The classic look and shape as soon as you place the club upon the ground gives you a feeling of an old school beauty.

The Fairway Wood is designed to encourage smooth turf interaction and to promote a solid contact from almost any lie possible. I hit a few balls in our state of the art theatre and straight away I found it so easy to launch the ball up in the air with a lot of forgiveness.

I recently had club legend Mike Mahoney in for a fitting, we hit a few fairway woods with a selection of various shafts and lofts and the 2017 Steelhead came out on tops!

When asked
"Mike your feedback is crucial to me, so how does it feel when struck?"

His reply;
"Scotty I'm going on Tour Thursday mate and I can't take my 10 year old Fairway so I better get this before they take the micky all weekend"

Thank for your feedback Michael, not what I was expecting, but very honest!

Llanwern Golf Club in the Community

As part of our outreach program to take golf into the local community, Assistant PGA Professional Scot recently attended a Newport Live UK event at Spytty Tennis Centre. Here Scot gave local children the chance to try golf and offer them some helpful tips and advice.

These events help to introduce golf to juniors and encourage them back to the Club to engage in our Junior coaching program and ultimately to become members and join our fantastic Junior section. Who knows we could soon have another Jack Davidson on our hands?

Jack’s Representing Wales This Week?

This week club superstar Jack Davidson is representing Wales in the 2017 Men’s Home Internationals at Moortown Golf Club near Leeds between 16th and 18th August. Ireland travel to Yorkshire hoping to win the Raymond Trophy for a fourth consecutive year.

A competitive series of matches is guaranteed as all of the players will be looking to impress ahead of the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup Team announcement, which is expected to be made on 21st August.

Good luck to Jack and Wales this week in this Major team event.

Trecco Bay All The Way!

On Tuesday myself, Club Captain Alan Fletcher, Manager Julian Sansom and Greekeeper extraordinaire Scottie Arnold, were lucky enough to play Royal Porthcawl only a couple of weeks after the Seniors Open Championship.

We were blessed with the weather and enjoyed a fantastic day out and even got to share a pint with Welsh Rugby legend Johnathan Davies (well kind of!). I think Alan needs a few bunker lessons, though after several failed attempts to escape one of their famous bunkers!

Choose the right ball

Not only is playing with the same model of golf ball each round important for your consistency, but you need to make sure that you’re taking to the course with a ball that suits your game and feel preferences. Comparing different balls is a great way to narrow down what you are after.

During a chat about your goals, price range and personal preferences we can make a few ball recommendations for you to go and try. Why not use the above scoring system when out on the course to determine which ball is best for your game?
