Club news

Jack’s Back

What can I say other than another massive congratulations to our very own Jack Davidson on winning the Welsh Amateur Championship last weekend at Aberdovey. Jack clinched the Welsh Amateur title to take another step closer to Walker Cup selection which is announced on the 22nd August.

Jack beat the Vale Resort’s Tim Harry in the final at Aberdovey by a convincing 8&7 victory, to earn his third title of the season after winning the Spanish Amateur as well as his European Nations success.

The Golf Union of Wales’ Championships Manager David Wilson said;
“This was a strong performance from Jack, who added the Welsh Amateur to his list of titles won this season.”

Huge congratulations to him on what has already been an excellent season, but with the Walker Cup later in the year as well, it could get even better. We are all so proud of you at the club Jack and it looks like you had a great night of celebrating back at the club on Friday evening with family, friends and members.

2017 Greens Program Update

The greens have been cut all summer at the height of 2.8mm which has provided us with some of the best putting surfaces in South Wales and the West for the past few seasons. Gareth and his team have recently been noticing the greens showing signs of stress and a small amount of moss invasion due to stressing out the turf with the low height of cut and the recent changing weather conditions.

In response to this they are going to run a micro tine aeration over the greens and apply a fertilizer with a moss killing agent. They have also temporarily raised the cutting height to 3.5 mm to reduce the stress and help to strengthen the grass structure for the upcoming winter. When this essential work has been undertaken the height of cut will again be lowered for the remainder of the playing season including finals weekend.

All For Good Causes

I would just like to say a massive thank you again to everybody who played in our Pro’s Day and helped raise over £600 for Cancer Research.

The Golf Club Charity Day is being played this year on Saturday 26th August in aid of Ty Hafan. This year it is a shotgun start at 1pm. Because of this spaces are limited to 26 teams. Places are going fast, so please book early to avoid disappointment. It for a fantastic cause and teams cost only £200 which includes coffee, dinner and raffle tickets.

Gwent Seniors

On Monday 7th we hosted the Gwent Golf Union Seniors Championships and it was a fantastic turnout. Scoring proved to be quite tough on the day, but I am pleased to say our very own Lyn Bateman won the title with a fantastic nett 66. To top his victory off Lyn recorded a Hole in One on the 7th. He very nearly had another on the 18th too hitting the pin with his tee shot and tapping in for a two. Well done Lyn on your victory.

Another Hole In One

Holes in one seem to be like buses. You don’t hear of any for ages then you get a barrage!

Congratulations to Brian Trendell who also had a Hole in One last week on the 18th at St Pierre. Anybody who has played St Pierre knows how special this is as it is such a difficult hole. Brian had his with a controlled driver he told me!

Scottie’s On The Road

Scottie has been busy this week playing in a PGA tournament at Burnham & Berrow. He is still playing at the time of writing this so we will update you next week on how he got on.

This week he had the man of the moment Jack Davidson on the bag caddying for him. ‘The Dream Team’ springs to mind or something like that!
