Welcome to a very special edition of The Steve Truman Golf Newsletter.
This jam packed issue highlights all of the incredible achievements that have been made this year by our fantastically talented members. I thought this was the perfect time for this unique edition following a great Presentation night last Saturday.
This has been a ground breaking record year for Llanwern, even with our outstanding history. I am sure that the achievements made this year would be hard to be beaten by any club in the UK! I have attempted to do as comprehensive a run down of the season as I possibly could. I can only apologise if I have left anybody out.
Right, here goes...............................
Starting with the men's section it has been an amazing year for both individuals and teams. The 1st team won the Gwent County Division 1 Championship and beat Radyr in the Champions Trophy of Gwent and Glamorgan. The 1st team made it to the semi finals of the Welsh Team Championships and the talented Jack Davidson and Owen Edwards narrowly lost in the final of the Golf Union of Wales Victory Shield Foursomes.
The 2nd team finished a respectable 5th in division 1 and retain their place in the premier league of Gwent.
The 3rd team gained promotion from their league and the 4th team finished 4th in the same league.
The 1st team have had many more successes as well including winning the Gwent County Team championship both gross and nett, Dave Barrell won the individual gross and nett during the same tournament.
Richard Tayler won the Gwent County Match Play.
Julian Sansom, Richard Tayler, Owen Edwards, Jack Davidson, Phil Rees, Dave Barrell, Lee Arnold and Gareth Ottewell all played for the Gwent County Teams, with our very own #CaptainCrunch Jonathan Davidson keeping a close eye on all and of course giving us all regular twitter updates!
Owen Edwards and Jack Davidson both represented Wales in the Men’s Home Internationals and the European Team Championships. Owen went on to represent Wales at the World Amateur Team Championship in Mexico (nice work if you can get it!).
Well done men! A great year...........Now onto the Seniors!
The team matches for the 2016 season have been strengthened in numbers over the past year and have achieved ever improving results. The team won the Sabrina Bowl after 12 consecutive defeats, they won with a margin of 46 stableford points. Tony Tubb won all of his 12 matches, Russell Hart won 10 and halved 1.
Tony Horton and Lyn Bateman won their respective age groups in the Gwent County Seniors Championships.
Now onto the future of Llanwern Golf club and our amazing Juniors................
Lewis Brown has had a brilliant season, winning the Junior Club Championship beating Peter Malpas in the final. Lewis narrowly missed out on winning the Men’s Gwent Strokeplay losing in a play off, an incredible achievement. Lewis also represented the Gwent under 18’s team and helped them win the Tri-Angular Tournament.
Dan Bearcroft won the Gwent U16’s Strokeplay Championship and also represented the Gwent County in the U18’s and U16’s teams.
