Club news

Rhiannon joins the team

I am delighted to introduce you to our newest member of the Steve Truman Golf Team Rhiannon Thomas. Rhiannon has started working at the club this week and even at her young age brings with her a wealth of golf experience. I am very confident she will be a fantastic asset to not only myself but to the club as well.

Rhiannon has spent the past four years working in the St Pierre Pro Shop. She has also recently completed a 3 year BSc Degree in Tournament Golf at Tournament Golf College St Marks & St Johns based in Plymouth and Portugal. She plays off an impressive 3 handicap and is really looking forward to her future at the club.

Welcome to the team Rhiannon and we really hope you enjoy it here.

Pugh and Giles on top form

Congratulations to Andrew Pugh and Steve Giles on their fine performances in last weekend's comp. Some great scores early in the season.

Jack and Owen putting Llanwern on the World Map

The 2016 Lytham Trophy was played is some extremely testing conditions and it was a credit to all 144 of the best amateurs in Britain and Europe who competed that they even completed their rounds.

Royal Lytham and St Anne's is an Open Championship venue and demands respect for its very tough par 70 layout, add 30mph winds, rain, sleet and freezing temperatures and you have a brutal test of golf for anyone.

This year Llanwern pair Owen Edwards and Jack Davidson were in the starting line up and putting their skills to the test at this fantastic venue.

Round 1 was played in temperatures of 3 / 4 degrees with a 30mph wind making the conditions freezing. Both Owen and Jack battled hard and recorded a score of 75 respectively this had them inside the top 50. The second round was played in slightly less wind 20-25mph and a little warmer with Owen scoring 72 and Jack 73. These scores meant both players made the 40 man cut and saw them move up the leaderboard to inside the top 30.

The final 36 holes were played on the Sunday in the rain, wind and cold, it was a tough day and a battle against the elements. Both Jack and Owen did themselves and the club proud by managing to shoot 78, 74 (Owen) and 76,76 (Jack) for final tournament positions of 21st for Owen and 23rd for Jack, yet again both players putting Llanwern on the world amateur golfing map. The Lytham trophy is the 3rd highest ranking amateur golf tournament in GB & Ireland so the entrants are the best in GB, Europe and Worldwide.

Well played boys #LTID

Scotties new bats

One of the golf clubs true un sung heroes Scottie has been enjoying his new clubs this week.

These beautiful new Titleist irons were a small thank you gesture from myself for the hard work and effort he has put in over the last 6 years.

I cannot think of anybody more deserving of some recognition for the tireless work he puts in for not only myself but the club as well on a daily basis. You can be certain members and visitors alike are always greeted with a warm smile, exceptional customer service and great humour. Well done Scott and keep up the great work.

Men Behaving Badly. Lads On (The Sunshine) Tour

The annual Llanwern Sunshine tour to Spain this year proved as popular as ever. This year the tour was sadly without one its biggest characters John Davidson. I am assured however that John would have been proud of their performances both on and off the course!!

The team champions of the week were: Chris Vaughan, Cliff Studley, Tony Cole and Jack Dickson. The overall individual winner of the Buddha was Steve Edwards with Phil Rees coming a close second.

Junior news

Peter Malpas on fine form recently

Not only is Peter one of the clubs most promising talents on the course he is continuing to prove his qualities behind a lens.

I think we need to consider peter for the role of official club photographer.

Well done Peter and keep snapping away.

One for Fun - 'The Famous Junior Sour Sweet Challenge'

We undertook a rather unusual Junior Section team bonding exercise last Sunday in the form of a Sour Sweet Challenge.

The rules were simple, who could keep the sour sweet in the longest.

The pictures give a quick snapshot of how it played out.

Make sure to check out next week's newsletter to view the full video!
